In a most dramatic display belly dancers from Ukraine were brought to Mumbai (Bombay) to celebrate Janmashtami in full public glare. Althought the organizer of the show, Vijay Kamble of the NCP found it absolutely fine, but the opposition was aghast.
Well I could not believe my eyes when I saw the exotic dancers gyrating in front of the public on a raised poduim. It seemed like a cheap display of female sexuality by a government which believes in closing down dance bars and night clubs to maintain the state’s puritanical image.

Three militants cut open the border fence at Akhnoor, 20 km from Jammu, on Monday night. On wednesday in the morning they entered the outskirts of Jammu and opened fire killing three civilians and a jawan. They then went on to forcefully occupy the house of a resident Billo Ram while he was away and took the women and children in the house hostage.
The army and the police have encircled the house and after a gunbattle, in which two of the three militants were killed, there has been to releasing of the hostages. The security forces have ensured that they will not be going in right now. It has been 12 hours now nad nothing seemd to be working. The Army is trying to persuade the militant to surrender by employing maulvis who are trying to make an appeal on behalf of the hostages.
The Army say that there have been several infiltration bids after the ceasefire was announced in 2003. 48 of them have taken place in 2008 it self. As the LoC is properly manned by the Indian Army, militants are targetting the International Border, manned by the Border Security Force, near Jammu to infiltrate into India. On Tueaday 30 heavily armed militants opened fire on the security forces across the International Border and it seems two or three men might have successfully entered Indian territories.

A rave party in a club outside the city of Bangalore was raided by yet another self appointed custodian of morality. They thrashed the men and abused the women in the party till the police came and managed to separate the men clawing at each other. In another incident, the police have banned all live bands from performing in Bangalore. Sunday saw the artists, students and locals protesting against the order on MG Road in Bangalore.
If the problem is noise pollution then I feel the police should stop all religious and political rallies, celebrations and public processions too. Street performances are seen as an important platform for the future growth of new music bands and theatre groups. Banning them would be curbing an outlet of new talent.

A BPO employee was gang raped by 10 men and she was found unconscious near a hillock in Pune. Conflicting stories are doing the rounds regarding the circumstances of rape. One indicates that she might have been raped in her room and another points to the company pickup cab driver who called her out and incidentally drove her to an isolated place where she was raped by him and his cronies.
Another incident that reveals how unsafe single working women are in India. After the Scarlet Keeling case there was a British journalist who lodged a similar complaint and the accused received instant bail. These incidents have become a regular feature of ‘Shining India”.
Men seem to be viewing women only as an object of sexual gratification and nothing more. The male dominated society of India seems to be incapable of accepting working women whom they see as easy prey and consider “open” in their views of sex.

An Indian commerce student found it the hard way.
You can have an opinion about anyone in a free country like India, even some one as important as Sonia Gandhi, but if you are not careful about the way you express it, you could land in serious trouble.
This is precisely what happened to 22-year-old IT professional Rahul Krishnakumar Vaid from Gurgaon, Haryana who was arrested by the Pune police for posting derogatory content about Congress chief Sonia Gandhi and Mahatma Gandhi on an orkut community named — “I hate Sonia Gandhi”.
Interestingly, the person who formed this community is not guilty as per the law. The police said that hating Sonia Gandhi is a personal opinion of the person who formed the community and having a personal opinion about someone is not an offence as per the law.
