With Hurricane Ike bearing down on the Texas coast, weather experts are bringing up the deadly precedent set by the Galveston Hurricane of 1900. In September of that year a Category 4 storm ripped through Texas, flooding most of the island and destroying the city. Historians estimate that a storm surge of 8-15 feet wreaked havoc on the community and contributed to the deaths of more than 6,000 people. The 1900 Galveston hurricane remains the deadliest storm in American history.

Ike is forecast to maintain Category 4 status as it moves across the Southeastern Bahamas and near eastern Cuba. Some further strengthening is possible due to less wind shear and warmer water. This could allow Ike to become a very strong Category 4 or possibly even a Category 5 hurricane before affecting Cuba later.

Its raining hurricanes this season. Gulf was soaked by Fay. Gulf was missed by Gustav. Now we will have to wait and see what Hanna and Ike have in store for Florida.
Hurricane Hanna appeared over islands Caicos and Turks. In fact so much was the strength that it knocked out power in these islands with storm winds averaging 80 mph.
