Tony LaRussa Attendance at Glen Beck Rally Demands Defense

Tony LaRussa defends decision to attend Glen Beck rally, amid controversy that he really shouldn’t have been there.  Tony LaRussa attended Glen Beck’s “Restoring Honor” rally, which brought in an estimated 87,000 to the National Mall. The Cardinals received phone calls protesting his attendance, as did an animal rescue charity that he works for.

He attended the rally along with Albert Puljols, who was receiving an award for community service.  The Glen Beck rally isn’t supposed to be politically motivated, and Larussa decided to view it as a spiritual rather than a politically motivated event.

“It was beyond gratifying. I was inspired. There were a lot of things that inspired me. It was more religious, much more religious (than political)  I’ll raise money for those folks anytime. Albert got a legitimate award I was asked to introduce. I don’t see the problem.”

There were a lot of people at the rally praising God, and thanking Him for the things in their life – and the troops.  Besides, LaRussa was far from alone at the rally, as the CBS news reports that some 87,000 came to the event and millions more watched the live stream via facebook and ustream.

Paris Hilton Arrested for Alleged Cocaine Possession in Las Vegas

Paris Hilton arrested for cocaine possession.  Paris Hilton seems to be on a downward spiral, and all signs point to potential drug usage.  Paris Hilton was most recently arrested in Las Vegas for an alleged cocaine possession. As you can remember, Hilton was accused of possession of marijuana at the World Cup in South Africa this summer.  She was also accused of drug possession in Europe as well.

Now her alleged drug use has come stateside, where the paparazzi can follow her freely and the media can cover the news.  It’s really sad that this beautiful young woman appears to have succumb to drugs.

One cannot help but wonder if she is going to follow in the footsteps of Casey Johnson, who was one of her friends who died after an alleged overdose.  Johnson was engaged to reality star Tila Tequila who was recently attacked at the 11th annual Gathering of the Juggalos.

Anti-Facebook: Diaspora Debuts September 15

Diaspora, the Anti-Facebook is set to debut September 15 according to reports. The site calls itself “privacy aware” and “self-controlled.”  The site will likely gain popularity with those who are weary of Facebook’s lack of privacy. (And blatant disregard for privacy concerns by the site’s leader.)

The founders of Diaspora, the Anti-Facebook tried to raise $10,000 to launch the site.  When they looked for funding, they received over $200,000 from 6,500 different people.

The site will be open-source which allows people to see the sites code and modify it.

Despite the excitement over the site’s launch, it still faces plenty of hurdles.  Facebook is second in traffic only to Google and there are hundreds of millions of users who log on to the site each and every day.

Are you going to join Diaspora, the Anti-Facebook?

Chile Released Video of Trapped Miners

Chile releases video of trapped miners.  There are 33 miners trapped in Chile, and they may not be able to be rescued until around Christmastime.  Luckily, people are able to get them food and supplies and are able to communicate with them.

The released video of the trapped miners shows that they are tired, but in good spirits.  During trying times like this it’s important to keep a positive attitude to avoid falling victim to the negative things that can happen.

The miners haven’t been told about how long it could take to get them out of there, as it is very possible that the psychological effects of the news would be a devastating blow to their minds.  Three or four of the miners are showing signs of anxiety and depression.

At least 9 of the miners are still too big to fit through the proposed rescue shaft. However, the men are losing weight while they wait down in the mine.  Their only lifeline is a pipe with about a 3.5 inch diameter, through which food, clothing, and anything needed is stuffed.

This is such a horrible thing that has happened, and I really hope that they are able to rescue these trapped miners.

Crocodile Dundee Tax Bill and Being Stuck in Australia

Crocodile Dundee stuck in Australia until his tax bill has been paid? Yes, that’s part of the news circulating today.  We all know that two things in life are certain, death and taxes…and taxes usually get you into trouble if you don’t do things right.

Crocodile Dundee’s tax bill has him stuck in Australia, as he can’t leave until its paid.  Other recent tax related legal woes have been felt by Wesley Snipes and Nicolas Cage.

The 70 year old actor now lives in LA, but went to Australia for a visit.  He’s now held a prisoner in his native lands, although his wife (and co-star in Crocodile Dundee) and son are stuck in LA.

So how big is the problem? $37.5 AUD big.  Yes, that’s a lot of money.  I am almost certain that Paul Hogan’s attorneys will be working hard to ensure that their client is able to re-join his family in the US.

Will Paul Hogan enlist the help of Roni Deutch to settle his tax debt? Probably not…but not because she’s a self-proclaimed IRS guru in the US only, but because she’s an alleged fraudster.

Word to the wise: pay your taxes. End of Story.

Google’s Orkut Declines in India, and Google Voice Calls from Gmail Launched

Google’s Orkut was an answer to Facebook – and never really took off in the US.  However, Google’s Orkut was popular in India and Brazil.  Unfortunately for the social networking site, Facebook traffic in India has now surpassed that of Google’s baby.

Orkut has 19.9 million users in India, and now Facebook’s popularity in the country has leapt by 200% to 20.9 million – dethroning Orkut as the most popular social networking site.

In other Google news, Google voice calls from Gmail was launched, which is a very cool feature. Calls within the US are free, and international rates are very, very low.

Google’s official gmail blog said the following:

Calls to the U.S. and Canada will be free for at least the rest of the year and calls to other countries will be billed at our very low rates. We worked hard to make these rates really cheap (see comparison table) with calls to the U.K., France, Germany, China, Japan—and many more countries—for as little as $0.02 per minute.

However, please note that US calls are free – “at least until the end of the year” which smells to me like a teaser rate. Be prepared for Google to charge for domestic calls in the future, although rates will likely be lower than using a regular landline telephone.
