The new season of “Whale Wars†should be intense after a collision between Japanese whalers and activists from the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society was captured on video on Wednesday in the Antarctic.
Six crew members of Sea Shepherd were saved from the icy waters after their new boat, the Ady Gil, was rammed and severely damaged by a Japanese whaling vessel, the Shonan Maru 2, according to reports. One crew member reportedly suffered a minor injury.
“It was aiming at the crew’s command quarters, which could have certainly killed somebody,†Sea Shepherd captain Paul Watson told the AP.
The Japanese crew claimed the Ady Gil was moving toward their ship with intent to ram, but misjudged the point of impact, according to reports.
The ongoing battle between the two sides is what is featured on the Animal Planet series, “Whale Wars.â€Â The Sea Shepherd team wants to put an end to Japanese whaling, as some whale species are near extinction.  The activists work to keep the whales safe from countries that still allow commercial whaling, according to the show’s web site.
Animal Planet officials are set to release a statement regarding the matter later on Wednesday.
