Comedian Soupy Sales, known for his pie-throwing, rubber-faced, improvisational style, died on Thursday at the age of 83.
Sales, whose real name was Milton Supman, had health problems and entered Calvary Hospice last week, and died Thursday in the Bronx, New York, according to former manager and longtime friend, Dave Usher.
At the peak of his fame in the 1950s and 1960s, he was one of the best-known faces in the nation, Usher told the Associated Press.
Sales began his TV career in Cincinnati and Cleveland, and then moved to Detroit, where he drew a large audience on WXYZ-TV. He moved to Los Angeles in 1961.
His greatest success came in New York with his children’s show, “The Soupy Sales Show.â€
