Heidi and Heather Burge – Double Teamed

A sports movie with a lot of fan fare and which I am looking to show to all my siblings – Double Teamed. Its based on women power and if it is half as interesting as Coach carter, it would be money well spent.

A bit about the background – Heidi Burge (born November 11, 1971 in Palos Verdes, California) is a retired professional basketball player. She is the twin sister of Heather Burge. Both graduated from Fairfax (Va.) High School and played college basketball at the University of Virginia and then played professionally in European leagues and in the Women’s National Basketball Association.

At 6 feet 5 inches each, they were the world’s tallest female twins before their record was broken by Ann and Claire Recht. The movie, Double Teamed, is based on their life stories and achievements in basketball.

In the WNBA, Heidi Burge played for the Los Angeles Sparks. She had to retire from playing basketball due to injuries.

The Burge sisters were forced to leave their former school and attend a different school so that they would have better chances at college scholoarships, according to their father. Heidi was bothered by her sister thinking that she was always second best.

Because she wanted to get out of Heather’s shadow, she joined in a school play. Heather was involved mainly in volleyball rather than in basketball, until a coach noticed her because of her height. She seized this opportunity to play basketball because it would help her train for the coming volleyball season.

Heather met Nicky, the star of the Palos Verdes Sea Kings. Heidi did not know she could play basketball until her father told her that he told the same coach that both of the twins would play for the school. Heidi, of course, initially opposed her father’s decision because she wanted to be independent of Heather. However, she later accepted it and decided to play.

The last women based sports movie I saw was Bend it like Beckham, incidentally which was again coming on cable today.

So go out with your family (and extended family) and enjoy this flick. This is one movie all would love enjoy watching.

Why are you posting your number here? Doesn’t make any sense to me.

Not all of the information above is correct, unless you’re strictly talking about the movie background. As far as describing the movie, the word ‘premise’ would be more precise. What you’ve posted as “a bit about the background” on the girls here is misleading. For one; in real life, Heidi & Heather Burge both graduated from Palos Verdes High School in CA. I know this because I went to school with them there. Of course the movie industry has changed school names and locations, even some of the reasons behind their playing the sport to add ‘drama’ but it was made well and it was fun to watch a movie about someone I knew. They are both beautiful, fun and inspirational people. I’m glad to see they’re getting some recognition. :)

Kim, thanks for the fresh perspective. I think Hollywood trying to add touches to the real story is a given since they are in the business of selling dreams.
