Chesley B. “Sully” Sullenberger

CNN has revealed the identity of the pilot of Flight 1549 and he is Chesley B. “Sully” Sullenberger.

Chesley Sullenberger is also the head of an aviation safety firm and he also served in the United States Air Force.
Chesley Sullenberger walked the plane couple of times to make sure no passengers were left behind when everybody was being evacuated.


According to two passengers on the ill fated plane, Jeff Kolodnay and Alberto Panero, Sully advised them to be ready for the impact at the time of the landing. Sully knew what he was doing and what it would involve.

Chesley Sullenberger is definitely a hero and is responsible for piloting the plane to a safe landing on the water after the incident with the flock of geese.

Chesley B. “Sully” Sullenberger, III is a captain for a major U.S. airline with over 40 years of flying experience. A former U.S. Air Force (USAF) fighter pilot, he has served as an instructor and Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA) safety chairman, accident investigator and national technical committee member. He has participated in several USAF and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) accident investigations.

His ALPA safety work led to the development of a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Advisory Circular. Working with National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) scientists, he coauthored a paper on error inducing contexts in aviation. He was instrumental in the development and implementation of the Crew Resource Management (CRM) course used at his airline and has taught the course to hundreds of his colleagues.

Sully is a graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy (B.S.), Purdue University (M.S.) and the University of Northern Colorado (M.A.). He was a speaker on two panels at the High Reliability Organizations (HRO) 2007 International Conference in Deauville, France May 29-31, 2007. He has just been named a Visiting Scholar at the University of California, Berkeley.

      Imagine if you had a soul. FYI: Race had nothing to do with this man’s stellar ability to handle this situation. Exceptional training and life experience says it all. If you want to get on a soap box then do so for the higher principal of older Americans staying in the work force. You are a sad case to attempt to make this about race. I weep for you.

      to captain sully.i am the pilot that landed on the turnpike in february and would like to talk to you .i am a two year pilot just starting out with 950 hours and hoping to get 1200 by the end of the summer,i have been compared to you for my landing and would like to share some experiences with you about my landing.

      tomorrow i am going to speak with a class about my experience with la salle university the college i originally graduated from before pilot week i will start flying skydivers to get more hours in hope to get in the airlines.a little advice would be great and hope to hear from you. thanks frank vogt
