Rio de Janeiro will work on crime and traffic before 2016 Olympic Games

Brazil at Night

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil beat out Chicago, Tokyo and Madrid to become the first South American city to host the Olympic Games in 2016.  The people of Brazil are known as the happiest people on earth.  The country is full of sun, beautiful beaches, and tropical nights.  The people of Rio are passionate about the Olympics and they want to host them.

“It’s a beautiful country, just gorgeous,” Arielle Martin, an athlete who is training at the US Olympic training center in California told the Salt Lake Tribune. “The food is great, the people are so nice. The concern that’s on everyone’s mind is the crime rate. … The big question they’re looking at is being able to control the situation and assure the safety of the athletes,” she said.

A social worker, Orlando Pinto said, “I don’t think it’s appropriate considering what our country is going through,” he said. “We don’t have good health services, education; we have transportation problems, housing problems, crime problems,” CNN reported.

Security and traffic will be the main problems that Rio will need to focus on.  Although the city will get money from the IOC, the city itself will also need to pay a considerable amount of money to work on transportation issues.  For the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympic games, the entire freeway system had to be re-vamped to handle the sheer number of people who attended the games.  It does take a lot of work and money, according to Mitt Romney, who organized the 2002 Olympic Games.

Rio de Janeiro Olympics 2016

brazil Rio de Janeiro Olympics 2016

Brazil at Night

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) picked Rio de Janeiro, Brazil as the host city for the 2016 Olympic games.  Chicago was out in the first round of voting, then Tokyo, then Madrid.

Brazil is the first South American city to host the Olympic games.

President Barack Obama, the first lady, Oprah and others made a trip to Denmark to voice their desires to bring the 2016 Olympic Games to Chicago, and are returning from that trip now.

CNN reported from downtown Chicago this morning when Chicago was eliminated from the Olympic bid.  The crowd unanimously looked perplexed, as though they didn’t hear the correct announcement.

White House officials called the result “disappointing” but said the president will move on to other issues.

Rio de Janeiro on the other hand is absolutely thrilled.  CNN showed a crowded beach and downtown area filled with people when the decision was handed down that they won the bid, people were screaming with excitement at the thought of the 2016 Olympic Summer games being played in their city.

Olympics 2016 Announcement Time (video)

In a little over three hours, the International Olympic Committee will announce their decision about which city will win the 2016 Olympic Bid.  Representatives from Chicago, Rio de Janeiro, Tokyo and Madrid all converged on Copenhagen yesterday to list their reasons why their city would be best for the 2016 Olympic games.

World leaders, sports stars and showbiz personalities have all been doing their bit to help swing the IOC votes their way.

President Obama delivered his address before the IOC saying, in part that the U.S. “is ready and eager to assume that sacred trust…I urge you to choose Chicago. And if you do — if we walk this path together — then I promise you this: The city of Chicago and the United States of America will make the world proud.”

First lady Michelle Obama, a native Chicagoan made her speech, and evoked memories of her father, who developed multiple sclerosis in his 30s, noted that as a child she remembers sitting on her father’s lap and cheering for Olympic gymnasts Olga Korbut and Nadia Comaneci. She said: “He taught me how to throw a ball and mean right hook better than anybody in our neighborhood,” breaking into her trademark smile.

Klitschko vs Arreola boxing on HBO

HBO Sports presents a heavyweight title fight between two ring giants in World Championship Boxing: Vitali Klitschko vs. Cristobal Arreola will be live Saturday, September 26 at 7 pm pacific time from the Staples Center in Los Angeles, and will be aired exclusively on HBO.  The World Championship Boxing team will be ringside for the event, which will be presented in HDTV and in Spanish on HBO Latino.

HBO Klitschko bio:

Native Ukrainian Vitali “Dr. Iron Fist” Klitschko (37-2, 36 KOs), who now resides in Los Angeles, is the elder of the PhD- and heavyweight title-holding Klitschko brothers. Widely regarded, along with sibling Wladimir, as the class of the heavyweight division, Vitali’s commanding 6’7″ presence and exceptional knockout power make him a formidable opponent. He is returning to the site of his legendary battle with Hall of Famer Lennox Lewis in June 2003, when a cut above Klitschko’s left eye ended the fight after six hard-hitting rounds. Resuming his career in 2008 after four years away from boxing, he subsequently knocked out former heavyweight titleholder Samuel Peter, as well as the undefeated Juan Carlos Gomez.

HBO Arreola bio:  Hailing from Riverside, California, Cristobal “Nightmare”Arreola (27-0, 24 KOs) hopes to use his hometown advantage to take down the taller Klitschko. At 6’4″, Arreola is hardly undersized or underpowered, impressively knocking out 24 of his 27 opponents while going undefeated against the likes of Travis Walker, Jameel McCline and Chazz Witherspoon.  Now, the fast-rising 28-year-old has a chance to send shockwaves through the boxing world and become the first heavyweight titleholder of Mexican heritage.

India vs Pakistan live streaming ICC Champions Trophy 2009

The India vs Pakistan cricket match today is estimated to attract several million viewers, and defeat is usually unacceptable for both teams.

India should be inspired by the fact that they have never lost to Pakistan in an International Cricket Council (ICC) in the battle for the trophy, even with the team’s fair share of injuries.

India and Pakistani cricket teams have played each other in non-test-playing nations such as Canada (Toronto) or the United Arab Emirates (Sharjah), but didn’t have the same number of viewers.

Here are a few live streaming sites where you can watch the match, but they are slow…and frustrating.  Sopcast requires the download of software before you can watch it.  It may be easier to wait until it is over and watch the video of it online.
