New viewers to Bravo’s “The Real Housewives of New York City” on Thursday evening may have seen something unique to television — an actual psychotic breakdown.  Most viewers are accustomed to the histrionics and melodrama of the housewives (all of them — New York City, New Jersey, Atlanta, Orange County), but Thursday’s episode, according to Teresa Giudice of “The Real Housewives of New Jersey, was “the most disturbing episode of reality TV I’ve ever watched in my life.”  And she wasn’t the only Housewife weighing in after Kelly Bensimon spent the episode claiming that castmate Bethenny Frankel was trying to kill her and even telling Alex McCord that she was channeling the devil.
“I sometimes feel she [Kelly Bensimon] is at a different place than the rest of us,” Ramona Singer noted in her blog. Â It was during Ramona’s “non-bachelorette party” that Kelly Bensimon seems to have “snapped” or had some sort of mental breakdown. Â Singer wrote that something seemed to snap in Kelly Bensimon at dinner. Â “She was not making any sense. It was as if she had a mini-breakdown.”
Alex McCord wrote in her “The Real Housewives of New York City” blog about Kelly Bensimon’s behavior as well, describing how the former Playboy model had said she was “channeling the devil” at dinner and later called her “Encyclopedia” as if it were an insult. Â Alex McCord said that during the photo shoot on the beach during Ramona Singer’s party, she felt uncomfortable, and when Kelly Bensimon, whose many talents (author, editor, designer, Playboy and fashion model) includes photography, attempted to get her to relax by saying her son’s name, she “almost ran into the surf to get away from her.” Â She added, “It felt very unsettling to listen to this woman who had been so aggressive the night before, suddenly throwing around the name of my child.”
Note that the diplomatic Alex McCord never suggested a mental breakdown or said that Bensimon was crazy, only implying that things were not normal.
But was it just part of the show, a part of Kelly Bensimon’s over-the-top act? Â Is Bensimon for real? Â Does she actually believe that Bethenny Frankel may be trying to kill her? Â And if Frankel was trying to kill her, does Kelly Bensimon actually believe that the natural foods expert and cook would do so on a videotaped show? Â Of course, if Bethenny Frankel were attempting to kill Bensimon, the former Playboy model may have saved herself by drawing attention to her line of maybe-not-so-paranoid thinking. Â The trade-off for not being killed and drawing the attention to her fears, however, is that now everyone thinks that Kelly Bensimon had a breakdown of some sort or has gone somewhere close to crazy.
Including her fellow “Housewives of New York City” castmembers…
