Dancing with the Stars Season 9 premiered last night and it is bigger than ever (literally). With 16 contestants, the producers the first week’s competition into two parts: the men and the women. Last night the men performed.
Taking the lead after Monday’s competition were Aaron Carter and Karina Smirnoff. Aaron Carter is the little brother of Backstreet Boy Nick, and had a lot of unbridled energy. The couple ended up in first place with an overall score of 32.
Donny Osmond and partner Kim Johnson were next up. The Utah native seemed very relaxed with his fox trot and quite the performer, and the audience seemed to love him. The couple ended up in second place with an overall score of 30.
Actor Mark Dacascos also showed great promise, he is the dramatic chairman on “Iron Chef America,” and has 11 years of martial arts training under his belt, which makes him more than fit to compete in this competition. His partner Lacey Schwimmer moved effortlessly on the floor. Total score for the night was 29.
Louie Vito, the champion snowboarder who is in training for the 2010 Olympics is a lesser-known star this season. He looks very young, especially next to his dance partner, Chelsie Hightower. Louie showed a fair amount of grace and good form. Total score of 27.
Chuck Liddell is also versed in martial arts, he is well known as a former ultimate fighting champion. He made a good effort and showed his frustration as he attempted to glide with partner Anna Trebunskaya across the floor. Total score for the couple 22.
Tom DeLay and Cheryl Burke were the next couple. The former House majority leader had to get in touch with his inner Wild Thing. Cheryl had the unenviable task of whipping this conservative Republican into dancing shape, despite an innate inability of his hips to go left. Total score of 20.
NFL hall of famer Michael Irvin did not have the judges’ favor. And while partner Anna Demidova (who won last season) worked hard to help him, he still looked a little stiff and unmanagable. Total score of 19.
Ashley Hamilton was happy to be there he said, son of George Hamilton and just trying to follow in his father’s footsteps. Partner Edyta Sliwinska wore an outfit that was very complementary and both looked dapper. Ashley also looked very stiff. Total score of 19 and tied for last place.
Tuesday night will be ladies’ on Dancing with the Stars, and Wednesday night will be the results show.
