Forest cover is fast disappearing in the hills of Assam as the state government tries to provide more land to support the increasing population.

Two prime tiger sanctuaries have been de-notified and today paddy fields mark what used to be lush forest.

10,000 people live in and around the sanctuary which is the constituency of the forest minister of the state.Fearing a depletion in his vote bank, the minister has clearly put the lives of the tigers at stake here. Apart from this in the tea gardens of Assam leopards are a constant hazard.

The appearence of wild cats in human habitats has led to increased poaching of the animals in most areas. This is certainly bad news for the Indian wildlife conservationists.

With our population bursting at its seams, it is the animals who have to pay for it with their lives.
