California teacher Amy Beck’s pictures have become a hot topic on the world wide web. Why would anyone want to see a social sciences and English teacher’s pictures (besides their being overly attractive)? It seems that Amy Beck is a twofold anomaly among those in the teaching profession. First, she had sex with one of her students, something the great majority of teachers spend their entire career avoiding – many not even considering. Secondly, Amy Beck is an anomaly in that she turned herself in to Burbank Police Monday without being accused or having an arrest warrant issued in her name.  Besides, people like looking at anomalies. Hence, Amy Beck’s pictures being in demand.
Amy Beck walked into the police station Monday, her lawyer at her side, and confessed to have a ten-month sexual relationship in 2009 with one of her then 14-year-old students. She told police that she was so wracked with guilt that she felt she had to turn herself in.
Since Monday, Amy Beck has become the subject of a myriad articles, blogs, e-mails, and tweets. And although the public sees a teacher like Amy Beck in the news far more often than they would like, the offending teacher generally is relegated to local and regional infamy. Few gain nationwide attention. But Amy Beck has. And, like Mary Kay Letourneau and Debbie LaFavre before her, she did it by being somewhat different than the others.
Mary Kay Letourneau made national news when she was arrested for having sex with her 13-year-old student, Vili Fualaau. She would profess her love for him; he would reciprocate. In addition to teaching, Letourneau was married and the mother of four children already. The scandal ran for weeks (and continues whenever the press finds a hook to resurrect it, such as when she married her former student – after seven years in jail – and in comparing her with other pedophilic teachers like Amy Beck, who is also the mother of three children). Her pictures were everywhere and Letourneau is still the unofficial face of female teachers who have sex with their students.
Debbie Lafavre was a Florida teacher who was arrested for having sex with a 14-year-old student in 2004. Her story didn’t seem all that different from other pedophilic teachers, except that Debbie Lafavre was attractive (and married), the vision of every “hot for teacher” fantasy, which undoubtedly drove the salacious story further than it would normally have gone. But that was before her “too pretty to go to jail” defense in court, a lack of humility that drove public anger and condemnation (in addition to the outrage over her crime). Her pictures became popular search items on the internet; news stories ran on her for weeks (and interest continues to be resurrected for her for probation violations and other seemingly mundane matters).
Amy Beck was booked on four charges of having unlawful sex with a minor under the age of 15 and one count of oral copulation with a minor under the age of 15. She is being held on $175,000 bond but has told her lawyer that she wishes to remain in jail for the time being to avoid the media.
Meanwhile, instead of the media avoiding her, the story caught public interest. Now everyone wants to see pictures of Amy Beck.
Because the public just can’t resist an anomaly…
