Martin Grossman Execution a Lethal Injection in Florida

Martin Grossman execution a lethal injection in Florida.  The execution of Martin Grossman took place today in the state of Florida.  The crime that he committed took place in 1984 when he was very young.

Martin Grossman was an Orthodox Jew, and many in the Jewish community begged for his clemency. The Pope even asked for clemency after requests from the Orthodox community.

Despite the pleas, the requests were denied.  The US Supreme Court even denied an appeal in his case.

The Martin Grossman execution is the result of a crime where the perpetrator beat and shot a police officer with her own gun, after he was going to get arrested for shooting a stolen gun in an undeveloped area. He was on probation at the time of the crime.

Grossman spent his last day with an aunt, a Rabbi and a couple of friends.  Family of the police officer killed were at the execution.  His last words expressed remorse over what he did.

It’s always sad when someone is put to death.  Grossman was on death row for the past 25 years, which means that he had a lot of time to think about his crime. He was denied clemency.

Why should anyone be surprised with the State of Florida having murdered Martin Grossman? Place the state-sanctioned murder in Florida of Grossman, a retarded individual together with other high ground, church-going moral standard bearing paragons of Christian decency, add to the mix the words of Emma Lazarus displayed on the Statue of Liberty “…..”Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me…” on the one hand, and place that in the context of the St. Louis that could not let Jews of Europe looking for safe-haven into the United States at the outset of word War II, in the context of the failure to bomb the concentrations camps as State department policy during FDR’s war-time administration, in the context and influence of Brenckenridge Long, who had assumed supervision over the Department’s of State’s Immigrant Visa Section during the FDR administration in years during World War II – a position he used to impede the ability of Jews and other victims of Nazi persecution to seek refuge in the United States. Adding to the mix the US gives the world government sanctioned slavery, the decimation of the American Indian, lynchings, Ku Klux Clan, Oklahoma City Morrow Federal Buildings, Blue Laws, dogs, murdered civil rights workers and few convictions, illegal wire taps, water boarding, extraordinary rendition and irregular rendition, dogs, water cannons, a Fifth Estate without balls enough to challenge wars and politicians, and a public that finds sound bites adequate to allow a media not to challenge its country’s leaders, a country that allows for O.J. Simpson to be acquitted, and a President to be “elected” not by its people, but rather by manipulation and corruption as was George W. Bush, and this they want to export to Iraq. The United States has no moral authority, no moral credibility and thousands hailing the glories of tele-evangialists and courting church leaders for votes, will not disappear the intrinsic blasphemy, hersey, moral turpitude and moral bankruptcy of a people who can on the one hand oppose abortion in the context of the right to life and in the same breath uphold a death penalty or the taking of a life that only G-d can give and take. Shame on American hypocrisy! Native Americans got it right, “The white man speaks with forked-tongue”

Ms. Warren’s response completely misses my point and starts with an argument irrelevant to the issue at hand. My personal religious observances and my degree of education or erudition have nothing whatsoever to do with state-sponsored murder. I don’t give a fig with whom Mr. Grossman is with now or not, either G-d or Peggy Parks – they are both dead. Ms. Warren’s stated justification for capital punishment is revenge, and not justice or crime deterrence (i.e. Grossman had to be killed to reconcile with Peggy Parks “the 26-year old mother of 2”). Further my argument is that the United States has a long history or moral turpitude disguised and excused in the form of religious observance and “family values” and that these behaviors are inconsistent with the anti-abortion position on the one hand and the concomitant support of capital punishment on the other.

    3. Its like you read my mind! You seem to know so much about this, like you wrote the book in it or something. I think that you can do with a few pics to drive the message home a little bit, but other than that, this is excellent blog. A great read. I will certainly be back.
