Erik Gates, of ‘Mythbusters’ Fame, Dies

Amateur rocketeer Erik Gates, who appeared on several episodes of the television series “Mythbusters,” died in what is being called a freak accident.

Gates, 47, died on December 20, 2009, in Newbury Park, CA, after falling 30 feet through a skylight at the headquarters of Xirrus Inc., according to reports.  He was reportedly doing contract work at the building with his electrical company.

“He was a good guy,” said Steve DeGennaro, Xirrus’ co-founder (along with Gates’ brother, Dirk), in the Ventura County Star. “He survived cancer, he jumps with parachutes, he base jumps. He’s an active guy who was used to taking precautions. This was a freak accident that shouldn’t have happened.”

Gates appeared as an expert on “Mythbusters,” in which with hosts Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman use scientific experiments to test myths.  Monday’s episode was dedicated to Gates.

The “Mythbusters” team also made a dedication via Twitter: “Team MB wishes to express our deepest sympathies on the passing of our beloved rocket expert, Erik. You were an honorary MythBuster and will be sorely missed.”
