The much-hyped, limited-release thriller “Paranormal Activity†will be easier for moviegoers to find this weekend.
The movie was released to a nationwide audience on Friday, following two weeks of midnight sellouts and fan frenzy over its initial limited release, according to Paramount Pictures.  Â
Much of the hype for the movie was due to an online “Demand It!†campaign launched by Paramount, which solicited horror fans to vote to have the low-budget movie released in their hometowns. The studio promised if the number of votes hit the million mark, it would release the movie across the country. The campaign was a success.
Another campaign asked fans to “Tweet your scream,†in which they could share their movie experience with their Twitter.com friends/followers.
“From the very beginning, we put this film in the hands of the fans and we trusted them to tell us where and when it should be seen. We couldn’t be more thrilled by their overwhelming support and we are happy to release the film in every town – big and small,†said Rob Moore, Vice Chairman of Paramount Pictures.
So what is this movie about? A description on the film’s web site gives a quick rundown:Â
After a young, middle class couple moves into what seems like a typical suburban “starter” tract house, they become increasingly disturbed by a presence that may or may not be demonic but is certainly most active in the middle of the night.
The movie is the directing debut of Oren Peli, a video game programmer, who used $15,000 of his own money to shoot the film with a handful of unknown actors, over seven days in 2006, according to the New York Daily News. It is getting rave reviews from the media, including the following:
“An ingenious horror film. It’s so well made it’s truly scary.†– Roger Ebert of The Chicago Sun-Times
“’Paranormal Activity’ is freaky & terrifying.â€- Owen Gleiberman of Entertainment Weekly
