Tankless Water Heater Tax Credit

This is the boon time for green energy providers and builders. President Obama is a big proponent of the alternative energy and smart energy. Learn how you can get the maximum benefit out of it.

If you had to ask  me, I would say now is the time to do away with the tanks. Go Tankless! I am going to list the rebates, tax credits, and the thing that beats them all, The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act aka Stimulus Bill which provides the best incentive in years to save money in the long run by going green and by reducing your carbon foot print.

In the new Stimulus Bill, following things are covered which would make any environment concerned person go green with pride, so check them out:

* Tax credits that were earlier getting over in 2009 will now be extended until 2009 year end.

* The amount of tax credits have been updated from 10% to 30%.

* Instead of limiting the tax credits to absolute numbers, now they will be percentage points. (ex: $300 for tankless water heaters), similarly tax credits have been pushed to 30% of the cost.

* Still the maximum value of credit has been raised from $500 to $1500, so its been limited to the upper amount but otherwise percentage points would come into effect;

However some heavy duty improvements for example big ticket items such as geothermal heat pumps, solar water heaters, and solar cell panels will not be limited by the $1500 maximum.

Tax credits are available to American consumers for 30% of the cost, up to $1500, in 2009 & 2010 (for existing homes only) for:

* Water Heaters, Tankless Water Heaters (non-solar)
* Windows and Doors
* Insulation
* Roofs (Metal & Asphalt)
* HVAC
* Biomass Stoves

Tax credits are available at 30% of the cost, with no upper limit through 2016 (for existing homes & new construction) for:

* Solar Water Heaters
* Solar Panels
* Geothermal Heat Pumps
* Small Wind Energy Systems
* Fuel Cells

If you live in US, here is how you can ensure you get your tax credit:

* Only qualifying tankless water heater companies are covered in this program.
* You would need a manufacturer’s Certification Statement.
* Save your receipts and Manufacturer’s Certification Statement for tax purposes.
* Make sure you use IRS Form 5695.
* Improvements must be “placed into service” (this generally refers to the installation, not the purchase) within the specified dates. I like this clause.
