The Political Powow Begins

Profiles of presumptive nominees candidates John McCain and Barak Obama.

John Sidney McCain III (born August 29, 1936) is the senior United States Senator from Arizona and presumptive Republican Party nominee for President of the United States in the upcoming 2008 election.

McCain graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1958 and became a naval aviator, flying attack aircraft from carriers.

Later that year while on a bombing mission over North Vietnam, he was shot down, badly injured, and captured as a prisoner of war by the North Vietnamese.

McCain retired from the Navy in 1981 and was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from Arizona in 1982.

McCain lost the Republican nomination in the 2000 presidential election to George W. Bush. He ran again for the Republican presidential nomination in 2008 and gained enough delegates to become the presumptive nominee in March 2008.

His personal life has been equally adventurous.

McCain’s first wife, Carol McCain, was a famous beauty and swimwear model when they married in 1965.  Mother of his three eldest children and a devoted wife, she was victim to a terrible car accident on Christmas Eve of 1969. It left her disfigured and with massive internal injuries, which confined her to a wheelchair and necessitated the use of a catheter.

John McCain divorced her in 1980 and, only one month after the final decree, married Cindy Hensley, an heiress to a multimillion dollar fortune, 18 years his junior, and with a father with political connections.

After winning a landslide primary victory in March 2004, Obama delivered the keynote address at the Democratic National Convention in July 2004. He was elected to the Senate in November 2004 with 70% of the vote.

Obama grew up with his half-sister Maya Kassandra Soetoro, the daughter his mother had with her second husband. Obama also has seven other half-siblings; his father had six other sons and one daughter. His biological parents and his one time step-father are no longer living.

Obama met his wife, Michelle Robinson, in June 1989 when he was employed as a summer associate at the Chicago law firm of Sidley Austin. They began dating later that summer, became engaged in 1991, and were married on October 3, 1992.
