Michael Steele has been elected as the chairman of the Republican National Committee today, a position he had been trying for very hard & for very long time. He had been lobbying like a crazy and I used to see him on Fox giving his sales pitch. He had the likes of Hannity supporting him, so you know where Michael Steele is coming from.

Michael is the first African American to hold the position and prior to this, he was the chairman of GOPAC. Michael has also worked as a partner at the law firm of Dewey & LeBoeuf. But that’s not all. Mr Steele has also served as the Lt Gov of the state of Maryland. The governor at that time was Robert Ehrlich.

Michael has many first next to his name. He has been the first African American RNC chief, the first African American to server in a state wide office in Md. He was also the highest ranking African American to serve in RNC for a long time.

Michael beat Katon Dawson 91 to 77 to become the chief. Katon is from South Carolina and currently the chairman of the SC Republican Party.

Some like to compare Michael Steele with Barack Obama. They say what Barack is to the Democratic party, Michael Steele would be to the Republican National Party. I find such claims ridiculous. Before I give my personal opinion on Mr Steele, let me say a few words about his background information, including wiki, bio, resume etc.

By the way you might find it interested to know that Michael’s sister was married to the boxer Mike Tyson at one time.

During his High School years, Michael Steele won the elections for the president. So this gives you an inkling that Michael had it with him from early years.

From there he won a scholarship to John Hopkins university in Baltimore. First year itself he displayed his leadership skills when he got elected as the class president. But academically, things were not as rosy. He almost got thrown out of the college there. However soon he buckled up and gradated with honors in International Relations in 1981.

From then on, in short, he took training to be a seminarian, but soon left to continue law. Started his career in the law field, and then opened his own consulting company. From there it was into the world of politics. Quite an interesting and exciting journey for him so far.

I have not seen much of Michael except his appearances on Hannity and Colmes earlier and now on Hannity. From what little bit I have seen of him, he appears as the total antithesis of Barack Obama. Where Obama is likable and charming, Michael is totally detestable, abominable. Obama has the positive habit of engaging even his detractors, think about his showing up on Bill O Reilly before the elections and continuing the practice even after winning the elections by breaking break with top conservative talking heads. On the other hand, I have seen Michael Steele getting downright ugly aggressive with Colmes on his (Colmes’s show with Hannity) own show.

So in effect, if Michael was trying to turn off the viewers, I would say he has been enormously successful.

I am at a loss to understand what in heavens name drove Republicans to choose this mean abrasive personality as their chief. Do they think that by choosing a black man as their leader, they can one up the democratic party? Or that the people will just vote for them now because they have a minority black guy in the hot seat? They still don’t get it. Obama did not win because he was black. He won because he deserved it. Is Michael Steele deserving? That’s the big question for which I have already answered and we will wait for the others, before we find out.
