If you watch CNN then you probably already know who Dr Sanjay Gupta is. Besides being the top medical talking head on CNN, Dr Sanjay Gupta also appears on CBS and writes for the Time magazine. He has very good credentials for the job but I am always skeptical of those who appear in the media. Do they become attention whores at some time?
Surgeon General Sanjay Gupta
Anyhow, Washington Post was among the first ones to report that the Barack Obama transition team has offered the job of top medical dog, known as White House Surgeon General in White House lingo, to Neurosurgeon Dr Sanjay Gupta.
My sources tell me that Sanjay finds this offer irresistible and too tempting to refuse. I don’t blame him for that. Being a CNN anchor is one thing. Being associated with politics, where the real power lies is a totally different stratosphere.

Sanjay Gupta has Indian roots and is of Indian descent. He is an assistant professor of neurosurgery at Emory University School of Medicine. Additionally, he is the associate chief of the neurosurgery service at the Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia. Fancy resume right there.
Sanjay Gupta’s childhood was spent in the playing fields of Livonia, Michigan and Novi, Michigan. These two cities are on the outskirts of Motown. Sanjay went on to receive his undergrad and masters degree from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. I personally rate this school par excellence.
After this, Sanjay completed his neurological surgery within the University of Michigan Health System.
Sanjay Gupta’s parents moved from India to the land of Motor Car, Michigan, to work as engineers at the Ford Dearborn plant in the rock ‘n roll 60s.
Patriot Sanjay Gupta
During the war with Iraq, Sanjay Gupta traveled to one of the most dangerous countries of the world at that time to cover the medical aspects of the US Iraq war. During his visit, Dr Sanjay Gupta was called upon to perform emergency medical procedures on both, US soldiers and Iraqi civilians. Sanjay was subsequently confirmed as an embed with a US marine medical unit.
A personal story – US soldier Jesus Vidana suffered serious head injuries in a battle and marines asked Gupta for medical help because of his background. Dr Gupta performed his wizardry on this soldier and Jesus survived enough to be sent home for rehabilitation.
Sanjay Gupta Controversy
Dr Gupta has had a wild run in with the writer, producer, directory of the movie Sicko – Michael Moore. Mr Moore is no stranger to controversy himself but the two heatedly debated some of the movie scenes shown in Sicko. Later on Dr Gupta was shown wrong twice but CNN attributed it to transcript error. Michael Moore also alleged that since medical companies are big sponsors of Dr Gupta’s shows, he would have a conflict of interest in saying anything good about the movie.
