Started a Wordpress blog on a self hosted site? Then this post is just for you. What do you do after you are all set to run your blog. Obviously besides posting, you will want to expand the features set of your blog by installing some cool pluggins.
I already have an earlier post on stuff to do after your blog is ready but this one is slightly different as it mentions the mother of all plugins.
The reason I refer to this plugin - Plugin Central - as the big daddy of all plugins is because, this one is going to make your job of installing plugins extremely easy by totally stream lining the whole process.
There is will be no head ache of downloading the plugins first and then unzipping the files on your local computer and then eventually uploading the files in the plugins directory using an FTP applications.
By using Plugin Central you will be able to install the plugins straightway from the internet. No more messing around with the third party tools to have your plugins going.
Do note that these plugins are of no help if you run your blog on wordpress.com and not host it yourself. There have been instances where wordpress.com users download the plugin and then spend hours trying to find a way to install it on wordpress.com.
Another perquisite is, this plugin is compatible with only 2.5 version of Wordpress.
Although this plugin will make your job of installing plugins infinitely easier, there is one drawback. In case the plugin file resides inside a sub folder of the .zip file, then it will throw an exception which you might have to fix manually.
But given the increasing popularity of this plugin, hopefully the plugin designers would start following a standard format which would ensure their plugins would get automatically installed using the Plugin Central.

I used this on my site also. It’s pretty convinience. Another I recommend is Wordpress autoupgrade, where you can automatically upgrade your wordpress installation withouth hassleing with http://ftp. I don’t know where this facility is integrated with wordpress 2.5 tho.
