Houston Road ClosureWith Hurricane Ike set to make landfall near Freeport late Friday night or early Saturday morning, there are a number of closings and cancellations throughout the area.

Some of the announced closings include:

• All area school districts will be closed tomorrow. Extracurricular activities, including high school football games, have either been cancelled or postponed.

• City and county governments are closing and suspending all but emergency services until the storm has passed.

• Courts will be closed on Friday and all jury calls have been cancelled for that day.

• All Houston Community College campuses are closed and classes cancelled.

• The University of Houston at Cinco Ranch, Sugar Land and Clear Lake are closed and classes have been cancelled until after the storm passes.

• The Galveston-Port Bolivar ferry will halt operations beginning Thursday night at 11 p.m. Service will be suspended until the U.S. Coast Guard determines it is safe to resume.

• George Bush Intercontinental Airport and Hobby Airport will both suspend flights starting Friday afternoon. Operations are scheduled to re-open Sunday.

Traffic is reported to be heavy on all major roadways leaving Galveston and Brazoria counties as evacuations continue. The Texas Department of Public Safety is recommending that evacuating families take only one vehicle. Additional vehicles will only add to the congestion, the DPS said.s
