Proposition 8 Overturn: CA Law Deemed ‘Unconstitutional’

Proposition 8 overturn happened yesterday, when a Federal judge in California overturned the law which was passed with voter support.  Proposition 8 overturn means that the judge feels that a ban on same sex marriage is unconstitutional, and could be a landmark step for gay rights.

Marriage is currently widely known as an institution between a man and a woman.  Same-sex marriages are not legally recognized in many jurisdictions. However, gay and lesbian couples would like to be acknowledged as such.

Still, the battle is not over.  The judge put a stay on her own ruling, and it’s quite likely that an appeal will be filed.  I would even venture to say that this case will go all the way to the Supreme Court of the United States, at which it will become as pivotal as cases such as Roe v Wade.

This will be a hot issue to watch on the political beat, so be sure to keep an eye out for more Proposition 8 overturn news.
