There is a lot of FUD being put out by competitors (especially in India) who are terrified by the Nano - particularly the two wheeler manufaxcturers and Maruti Suzuki who currently make the worlds cheapest car at twice the price. Businessweek is an Indian publication by the way, and the likes of Bajaj, Hero-Honda, and Maruti-Suzuki must be important advertisers.

Basically the Nano has been under tight wraps until last week, and almost nothing was known about it. Tata says that they have tested the Nano and that it is complies with international crash test standards and Euro IV emission standards (same as Bharat III Indian emission standards)because they have actually tested it.

Yet you get a whole load of pundits who have just crawled out of the woodwork, with no access to any the Nano or to any data about it other than what other pundits have been saying for the pasy year, who profess to know that it won't pass crash tests, that it won't comply with international standards. Go figure!

[...] The Planet Of Cars wrote an interesting post today onHere’s a quick excerpt Tata’s Nano has created a lot of buzz in the international media. Ratan Tata, chairman of Tata delivered what he had promised - a car for the people at the bottom of the pyramid. Here is what BusinessWeek is saying about the car and its surrounding hoopla. “If you follow the auto business, the place to be today is New Delhi, where Tata Motors has unveiled its long-awaited $2500 car, the Nano.
As per the statistics from Economis, about 1,800 people die on Delhi’s roads each year, perhaps one-third of them on two-wheelers. Only 5% die in cars. Tata’s project may pose risks for investors, but it promises unaccustomed safety for customers.

Nano will defn have a positive effect at least in one segment if the car becomes a success.
